Useful information about the test
Is there any danger in connecting the testing box to your car?

The La Belle Batterie testing box is merely a reader: it simply communicates with your car to
collect the required information, thanks to the La Belle Batterie app. It can in no way alter or
disrupt your car’s settings.
So don’t be afraid: plugging in your testing box is perfectly safe!

Where is the OBDII port located in my vehicle?

Our testing box is non-intrusive, and connects to your OBDII port. This port enables the
device to perform the analysis of your automobile. All vehicles manufactured since 2001
have an on-board diagnostics (OBD) port inside the car.
However, the location of this port depends on the model. It may be under the storage
compartment, near the handbrake, or close to the steering wheel. But don’t worry: we
explain where to find the OBDII port for your vehicle in the tutorial included with the La Belle
Batterie Kit.

I can’t connect the La Belle Batterie app to the testing box

The connection between the testing box and your phone occurs when you press the button
that reads “Connect the box.” If nothing happens at that point, check in the phone’s settings
to ensure you have allowed the app to access your location services data.
Note: for owners of an Apple iPhone or iPad, you should allow access to your location
services with the option “While Using the App.”

Get my certificate
How do I obtain my certificate?

To receive your certificate, you need to order our La Belle Batterie Kit and then test your
electric car. The test is quick and easy to set up, and only takes five minutes to perform.
Once your car has been tested, send us back the La Belle Batterie testing box thanks to the
prepaid envelope included with the Kit. Once you have mailed the envelop, we will send you
your La Belle Batterie certificate through the post, and will provide you with a digital version
(.pdf) in your online Personal Space.

You’ve changed your mind or discovered the Kit is not right for you? How do you return it?

You have 14 days from the moment you receive your order to return the product. To proceed
with the return, simply send a request via email to
support-labellebatterie@batteriesforpeople.com

How do I perform the test myself?

Testing your electric-vehicle battery is quick and easy thanks to the La Belle Batterie Kit. The
Kit contains all of the equipment necessary for you to obtain a battery certificate. To help you
through this process, we have included in the Kit a tutorial that is specific to your vehicle
model. In addition, we have developed an app that will guide you, step by step, through the
battery diagnostics process.

How much does it cost to get my certificate?

Only €29 (excluding shipping costs for the Kit). Once you’ve ordered and paid for the Kit,
there will be no additional fees. We handle the fees for the return shipping of the box and for
sending you your certificate.

Traction battery and aging
What is a traction battery?

An electric vehicle has two batteries: a 12V battery for certain equipment, equivalent to the battery of an internal combustion engine car; and a traction battery (or battery pack), which powers the car’s electric motor. The traction battery is made up of dozens of small batteries, or cells, that are interconnected. I can’t connect the La Belle Batterie app to the testing box The connection between the testing box and your phone occurs when you press the button that reads “Connect the box.” If nothing happens at that point, check in the phone’s settings to ensure you have allowed the app to access your location services data. How can you calculate the maximum range at full charge?

The range displayed by the dashboard depends on several external factors, such as weather
conditions or driving style. “Sporty” driving reduces the vehicle’s range, while smoother
driving will increase it.
To establish the benchmark range for a given State of Health for your battery, you must
charge the vehicle to 100% and reset all external factors to zero. You can then determine
the maximum range for a fully charged battery, which then allows you to compare the aging
of different electric-vehicle batteries. For two identical models, the discrepancy in the
maximum range for a single full charge indicates the difference in the state of degradation
for the two traction batteries.

How to measure aging?

The State of Health (SoH) gives a picture of the level of degradation of a battery pack. It
compares the maximum electric power a traction battery can supply at a given moment with
the maximum electric power it could supply when it left the factory. Another way to measure
the aging of a traction batter is to determine the maximum distance, in km, that the vehicle
can travel on a single charge with standard conditions (i.e., the maximum full-charge range).
Why and how does my electric-vehicle battery degrade?
As an electric vehicle ages, its range decreases. The decrease is due to the chemical
degradation of the battery pack. This phenomenon, known as aging, depends heavily on the
specific conditions in which the vehicle is used and stored. For example, hot weather and
fast-charging cause traction batteries to age more quickly.

What is the BMS, and why reconfigure it?

The BMS, or battery management system, is software that manages the various cells that
comprise the battery pack so that they charge and discharge consistently. As the cells
degrade, the BMS may no longer offer an optimized management of the battery pack. This
situation limits the amount of electric power that the traction battery can provide, which in
turn significantly lowers the SoH and the vehicle’s range. Reconfiguring the BMS entails
updating the software with an algorithm that takes into account the actual state of chemical
degradation of the cells. The result is better battery management and therefore an increased
range.
For any two traction batteries with an identical SoH, you also need to pay attention to the
number of reconfigurations: a battery that requires frequent updates to the BMS may
indicate advanced aging, and the SoH is in danger of dropping more quickly.

“Locbat” battery rental: Do I need to certify a rental battery?

Certain car manufacturers offer their customers the possibility to rent their electric-vehicle
battery, thereby guaranteeing the vehicle’s State of Health: when the SoH goes below a
certain threshold, either the battery management system (BMS) is reconfigured or the
battery replaced for free.
For a buyer, even if the battery belongs to the manufacturer, it is recommended that the
battery’s level of degradation be tested—first, because of its impact on the vehicle’ range;
and second, because of the potential need to take the vehicle to the manufacturer (either to
reconfigure the BMS or to change the battery).
For the owner of an EV who is renting the battery, certifying that battery allows him or her to
measure its SoH in order to see if it is eligible to for replacement or repair. In addition, a
certified battery, even for a battery rental, makes reselling a used electric vehicle easier.
